Hello, my child
lost in his thoughts
Now suspended from school
because, in class, he fought
When asked why, he can't explain
And to speak without profanities
he can not reframe
While pretending to be a part of a gang
Hoping to get lost in the pack
maybe then, he won't feel the weight of the world on his back
Who he is or wants to be
he does not know
So, the coolest guy around
he will follow
If any of this sounds like you
Know
to yourself
be true
Don't just follow the crowd
like a fool
to build a brighter future
You possess the tools
All of your talents, life's purpose, and identity
is waiting to be discovered inside
So, be grateful that you are alive
And say, "Hello!", to the young man looking back at you in the mirror
because for whom you are searching
Has already arrived
The young boys I work with inspired me to write this. I noticed, that most of the boys would follow the "coolest" guy in the classroom. For some reason, they idealize the kid that gets in the most trouble and tries to follow their example for a seal of approval by others. Please share this poem with all young men that you know.
